Days passed, and still, Zoe didn’t wake up.

I was starting to really worry that she never would. The glowing map on her body was still there but getting dimmer by the day. Something was happening to her, and I didn’t know what it was or what it meant.

Aside from going to check on Zoe at least twice a day, I sequestered myself inside my hut to try to figure out how to save her and how to save Ansel from his dismal fate as the dark wolf. I turned away everyone who came to see me—including Ansel. I just couldn’t deal with any other distractions right now. I needed to focus on finding a way out of this for all of us. I knew Ansel was distraught over not talking to me, and I really wanted to speak to him instead of leaving things like we had. But it would have to wait until I found a way to save him from himself.

Finally, on a night that I was exhausted and hungry and just about to take a break to search for some much-needed alcohol, Kaelie managed to worm her way into my tent to bring me some food and wine. I was too hungry and too thirsty to turn her away.

“Hey,” she said with a partial smile as she walked inside. “I thought maybe you could use some food and drink.” She extended her hand to offer me the bottle, and I eagerly took it and pried out the cork.

“Thanks,” I said, conceding to letting her come in and sit down. I poured us both a glass of wine while she set the food out on the table. I was hungry, but I hadn’t realized how absolutely starving I was until I saw the food and felt my mouth salivate. I greedily grabbed a chunk of meat, tore off a hunk of bread, and shoved them both together in my mouth at once.

“Damn, you were seriously hungry!” she teased.

“Yeah,” I mumbled through my mouthful of food as I chewed. I honestly could have eaten the whole spread.

“Can I be brutally honest with you?” Kaelie asked as she took a sip of her wine and looked at me over the edge of her glass.

“Sure.”

“You look like hell.”

I laughed. I didn’t mean to; it just kind of came out due to being so overtired. I hadn’t been sleeping well ever since I had figured out what that stuff on the cave wall meant.

“I’m serious,” she continued. “You look completely manic and disheveled. What’s going on with you? Why won’t you talk to anyone? Ansel is pulling his teeth out because he’s so stressed out about you.”

I gave her a look of shock, but she clarified that it was simply an expression and not actual teeth-pulling. Still, it was obvious he was suffering.

“Have you been able to figure anything out yet?” she asked.

“How am I supposed to figure anything out when you guys are constantly interrupting me? “I lashed out at her. As soon as I did it, I realized how wrong I was and felt terrible about it.
